Monterey’s Otter Opry provides a unique Bluegrass and Americana music experience. Our bimonthly shows provide an opportunity for music appreciators of all ages to take in the sights and sounds of popular touring bands as they enjoy a night’s reprieve from the road and from big city venues – right here in Monterey.
Orchestrated by musician and former California Bluegrass Association Board Member, Larry Phegley, Otter Opry serves up a down-home evening in an intimate setting. With the venue and optional family-style dinner provided by the Monterey United Methodist Church, attendees might even get a chance to dine alongside the stars.
With no religious strings attached – other than those of the instruments – our all-volunteer organization is devoted to bringing and sharing the energetic, soulful notes of Bluegrass and Americana music to the greater Monterey Bay. Along with our attendees and the bands who play, Otter Opry supports the rich heritage of community gathering that helped bring this music to life in the first place.
We’ll bring the bands, and they’ll bring the jam – join us for a memorable evening.
Join the Jam
Through our partnership with the California Bluegrass Association, Otter Opry can help aspiring, young musicians borrow instruments and access recreational, instructional, and performance components through its lending library. Larry and the extended Otter Opry family invite musicians wanting to play bluegrass to join them for weekly jams; Wednesdays at Dennis the Menace Park from 11-12:30. Also at the Pop and Hiss, 215 Forrest Ave, Pacific Grove, Thursdays 7-9PM. We’ve also been known to host some impromptu jams at the church prior to concerts.

Otter Opry is an event of the California Bluegrass Association. Nearly all proceeds from ticket sales go to the band with a nominal portion supporting the administrative overhead of the Association.
